Osun State University, UNIOSUN, Celebrates Maiden Convocation Ceremony, Honors Achievements of Graduating Students
Osogbo, Osun State – Six years since its establishment, Osun State University (UNIOSUN) celebrated a momentous milestone as it held its first convocation ceremony last Saturday. The event marked the graduation of students from five of the university’s eight faculties, with notable achievements in various academic disciplines.
A total of 371 students received their degrees during the ceremony, which was attended by dignitaries, faculty members, proud parents, and well-wishers. Among the graduates, nine students were awarded first-class honors, while 168 achieved second-class upper honors. Additionally, 183 students received second-class lower honors, and 11 students attained third-class honors.
The convocation speech was delivered by Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the state governor, who extended his heartfelt congratulations to the graduating students, their parents, and the entire institution. Governor Aregbesola commended the students for successfully completing their academic journey and emphasized the importance of both knowledge and character development.
In line with its commitment to providing ongoing support to its alumni, Professor Sola Akinrinade, the university’s vice-chancellor, highlighted the establishment of the Graduate Support Office. This office, established a few months ago, serves as a centralized hub for coordinating support and resources for UNIOSUN’s graduates. It aims to assist them in their post-graduation endeavors and foster a strong network of successful alumni.
During the convocation ceremony, a special recognition was given to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, who was bestowed with an honorary Doctor of Letters degree by the university. The esteemed monarch received this honor in recognition of his outstanding contributions to society and his exemplary leadership.
Osun State University, which received its license from the National Universities Commission (NUC) on December 21, 2006, has grown from its inception and is making significant strides in the Nigerian higher education landscape. The institution was conceived by the previous administration of Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola and nurtured by a team led by the former Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Peter Okebukola.
The successful convocation ceremony reflects the dedication and hard work put in by the university’s faculty, staff, and students. As Osun State University continues to advance its academic programs and provide quality education, it remains committed to shaping the future of its graduates and contributing to the socio-economic development of the state and the nation as a whole.
